Saguaro National Park is humbled to be one of the many community partners taking part in the BEYOND: * Commemorate * Celebrate * Commit, event taking place on January 7, 2012.
The events of January 8th, 2011 were devastating for this community. Whether you were affected on a personal level or not, it was a hard day for all. It was especially difficult for the staff of Saguaro National Park. Congresswoman Giffords and Gabe Zimmerman had supported our efforts on both a professional and personal level. And our hearts were deeply saddened for the many others who were touched personally by this horrible day. To hear of such shocking news made us realize just how precious life is and how a community can transformed in an instant.
How could we, as a National Park, help with moving forward? What could we do to help? Was there a way to re-connect the community the cradles each side of our park? Yes and the BEYOND event is a wonderful way to bring us together, committing to a stronger community and being active within the beautiful surroundings around the Tucson area.
So, it was an easy decision to get involved with BEYOND. We are teaming up with the Southern Arizona Roadrunners for a free, non-competitive 5K social run among the cactus at the Tucson Mountain District of Saguaro National Park. Runners and walkers of all ages and abilities are invited but, please, no wheeled vehicles and sorry, no pets.
The course will include rolling dirt roads, some pavement, and plenty of gorgeous National Park scenery. The run will not be timed, but participants must register. This FREE event is limited to 400 participants due to parking and trail usage concerns, so please check on registration details at www.azroadrunners.org.
We are honored to be part of a new tradition for not just for Saguaro National Park but most importantly, for Tucson and Southern Arizona.
